The Handy Road print by Lee Xin Li features the iconic landmark of Dhoby Ghaut, Cathay Building which is situated along Handy Road, at the foot of Mount Sophia. The original building was completed in 1941 and was the tallest building in Singapore when it was built. The current structure only retained the facade of the original building and has been redeveloped into a shopping mall and residences.
The illustration also features the School of Fine Arts (SOTA). Rows of shophouses of Kirk Terrace and parts of Prinsep Street used to occupy the site where SOTA sits today. On the left is part of a row of former shophouses extending beyond the current Former Malayan Motor Showroom. Handy Road was named after James Muttiah Handy, a prominent medical doctor in early Singapore. As of 26th May 2023, the Cathay Building has been closed for a major revamp since June 2023.
